As I said before it was way ahead of its time... just lacked the understanding of how nasty the Radio Business is.

First Love Radio sent shock waves to Choice fm and the rest of the Radio Industry ... UKRD Scrambled for it ...like the Scramble for Africa.. and then it was subsequently divided and sub-divided.

All who should have been awake ..... to the changing climate of radio would have allowed Rock II Rock / First Love Radio to develop its own unique brand and way of broadcasting.

The most fantastic thing of all is that Reprezent is able to inherit the legacy of a decade of hard work, campaigning, burning the mid-night oil and so on by this pioneering group of Young Black people from Lewisham... I am proud to have been one of them...

I hope that at some point Reprezent will acknowlede the hard works that went into creating opportunity for the frequency 107.3 to have even been made available in the first place.

107.3 did not just drop from the sky!

For Me, I am proud to have been a young black women, dare I say the First ever Young Black Female Radio Owner in the UK and a Pioneer for all those young Black presenters on Reprezent today.

Yes Race did have a lot to do with it, otherwise the mention of Black would not have been made in the preceding blogs.

The 2010 Euality Act came in at a good time for Reprezent. I usually mix up 6 Music, Planet Rock, Kerrang and XFM, none of whose output is available on FM, at least not nationally and with good reception).

However, today all my stations are subject to massive interference. Choice sold out and thats why not many people in the community are listening to it.. BBC 1xtra isn't for us, its for kids who are into grime and the overdone gangsta image imported from Ghetto America.. And yet there are numerous licensed Asian stations serving their communities :/.. If you were living in that area, would you listen to the established station (Choice had been on air for 9 years when FLR launched) or the upstart?

When Litt Corp (Sunrise) took over Fusion and relaunched as Time, they broke the conditions of the format by only playing pop music and also simulcasting 106.8 which they didn't get permission for. There was then a time when 107.3 was completely automated bar a 4 hour breakfast show with Jonathan Miles.

After re-launching as South London Radio, they used a mix of paid and volunteer presenters, some who worked in hospital and community radio with a poorly programmed mix of pop, soul, motown and 90s dance.

The fact is Lewisham was too late for a small scale black orientated licence as Choice although licensed for Brixton covers the London Borough of Lewisham already.

It's taken until 2011 until 107.3 is correctly serving the listeners of Lewisham as Reprezent, catering to the youth sector.Martin Phillpnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078262770562171996.post-9509742366658371642012-05-09T22:41:00.306+01:002012-05-09T22:41:00.306+01:00I have been told that Guernsey will never get DAB ...I have been told that Guernsey will never get DAB radio. I could not see any AM/FM radios for sale, a radio with long wave is pretty rare. I have had two dab radios they were both useless and I am in a strong signal area. By the way, does anyone remember shortwave - its still going strong , stations from all round the world all free , still using a 30 year old short wave receiver and I have given up listening to the biased, PC obsessed BBC. The radio landscape in Britain and elsewhere looked very different to what it does today. Invicta grabbed a large young black female audience that wasn't being catered for by Capital or the BBC. When Invicta was on air, the phones never stopped ringing..Kiss FM was a set up as a sop to the Radio Authority, it was a white man's idea of what black radio should sound like..and today's version of Kiss FM(the name ripped off a couple of stations of that name in the states btw) is even worse.. and if you listen to alot of today's radio in Britain it sounds crap. having worked in Ireland, the Middle East and a few other interesting places since then..Listen to your average commercial station in London, it's consulted by people who were in their day crap disc jockeys(not mentioning any names here now, but they know who they are) playing Simon Cowell music..what they call AC that's a joke..anyone with a large powerful transmitter and a great format would wipe the floor with Capital etc..it's not that hard if you know how:) Sadly most of these so called kings and queens of industry didn;t have a clue 20 years ago still don;t! what am I doing now running my own successful station here in Spain aimed at the international market and a full ad book:)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078262770562171996.post-47256807211083246062011-08-28T15:07:29.245+01:002011-08-28T15:07:29.245+01:00@Richard said...

I said that - there was growth in digital listening . Pg 3 , 1.3 Ofcom state there was a ‘ 2.5pp increase in digital listening over the year ‘ .
2. I said that - there had been growth in terms of homes with digital radio . Pg 3 , 1.10 Ofcom state that households claiming to have access to DAB digital radio were ‘ up by 3.7 percentage points year on year ‘ .
3. I said that - digital radio sales actually held up – they are flat year on year . Pg. 13 Ofcom state that DAB radio sales in year to Q1 2010 were I.9m and in year to Q1 2011 were 1.9m .

I do not believe that quoting statistics verbatim from an Ofcom report could in any way be perceived as being an attempt to deceive consumers.

You say that the only believers still ‘worshipping ‘ DAB – from which I take you mean supporting – are DRUK , Radio Centre , Ofcom and Government .

I would add to that list the BBC and the major Commercial Radio Broadcasters as well as the 46% of all radio listeners who are happily listening on a digital platform every week.

I admire your one man campaign in the face of progress and what consumers / listeners genuinely enjoy . I'm highly du...I agree with the other comments. I'm highly dubious about DAB in car radios.

1. Will it work all the time, not just in population centres?

2. Are there really going to be sufficient channels to justify having DAB? Half the national BBC channels are already on FM, the others are repeats, minority interest and the admittedly good BBC world service. But do I really want a new radio for one channel?

3. DAB offers up to 20 channels that might or might not work on my journey. A month ago I was driving in Canada listening to the satellite radio - with well over a 100 channels. It worked in the mountains when the FM signals faded. Should we not be thinking about this technology?

4. Would my DAB car radio work in France when I travel there next month, or are they on a different system?

5. Are manufacturers really going to install separate radios for one market? If so how much will the additional cost be? I'd suspect quite substantial as radios are now built into wider information systems rather than being standalone units.

6. What about cars such as my present one - a Prius with an integrated music system, I can't see me buying a new car just to get a new radio.

In short isn't this all a little too late. I bought two DAB radios around eight years ago, but times have moved on, I have satellite in the living room, itunes in the study and wunderadio on the iphone. DAB looks increasingly irrelevant in this environment.Mark Luntleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04948736289025028909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9078262770562171996.post-4285095895272189062011-07-15T16:19:02.598+01:002011-07-15T16:19:02.598+01:00Interesting find; thanks for those words on Invict...Interesting find; thanks for those words on Invicta.
